Gotta tell the boyfriend so we can be cookin’.
John, let’s make these. :-)
This looks like fun.
Here are the first seven of the modern BoM club from sewmamasew. I have my favorites for sure, but I really dislike the top left block. Even though I used a perfect scant 1/4” seam allowance and paper piecing, it still turned out bad. Also, each block is not the same size, so I’ll have to make it smaller. My plan is to make a 6x2 wall hanging out of all twelve blocks and use it as a faux headboard.
Reflecting on Sewing
Looking back at the 2011 sewing scene, what trends stand out in your mind?
Based on what I’ve seen on Pinterest, some of the big trends about sewing and fabrics are fabrics with unique patterns that remind me of my childhood. Some of the ones that stick out are patterns with robots, cartoons, etc. that add whimsy, but aren’t as tacky as some of the things my mother made me!
What were some of your favorite things related to sewing this past year?
My favorite thing this year has been getting my own sewing machine. It’s nothing flashy, but I love how it’s all come back to me.
What did you make that you’re most proud of?
I’m most proud of my very first sewing project with my new sewing machine, this little fabric box. I used leftover fabric from another project, and it looks amazing just on top of my little china cabinet.

What sewn projects have you seen this year that you absolutely love?
I absolutely love all the different puff quilts and all the possibilities for different looks.
Do you have a favorite sewing book or pattern from the past year to recommend?
I’d recommend that fabric basket tutorial. It was super easy, and I’d love to make a couple in coordinating fabrics to place around my apartment. Perfect for someone who isn’t quite sure about their sewing abilities, but who want to expand.
Are there any trends you’re over and done with?
Nope! Although I’m sure as I pay more attention to sewing that people are pinning, I’m sure I’ll notice things more.
What are your thoughts about social media? How is it going for you? What do you love or hate?
I absolutely love Pinterest to share all the beautiful projects people have been making. I’d love to see some way that people could collect similar projects together to show off just how different the same project could look in a different fabric. If there’s one thing I beg of you, though, please use permanent links in your pins to make it easier for all of us who want to actually make the item in the picture. Nothing’s more disappointing than finding out you have to scroll through pages of archives in the hopes of finding the project in your pin!
Did you have a favorite fabric collection or print in 2011?
I’ve been busier knitting, so fabric hasn’t really been on my radar. I really just love bright colors that seem fresh.
What do you predict for 2012 in the sewing industry?
I think we’ll see more DIY/make your own as the economy slowly recovers. This can only increase the amount of sewing we’ll see in the future, as people customize and personalize their wardrobe and home goods.
Can you tell us what to expect from you in 2012? Any big projects or life-changing goals?
The only goal I have is to finish the baby quilt (see post below) and get better at sewing. I’d love to be a more competent hand-quilter and expand my skills with my machine.
I created these my senior year of college (2009-2010) and have just gotten around to framing them. My favorites of the group are my symbols (it’s a secret love letter to Lady Gaga) and the White-on-White zig zag. I love the combination of the flat, smooth ink and illustration board with the plump texture of the quilted mercerized cotton.
